what a sight Frank Capra’s The Miracle Woman was!!!! David Manners plays a blind musician about to end his life, until he hears the voice of evangelist Barbara Stanwyck on the radio, and gets him to literally climb off the ledge. But when he then enters her life, it’s the blind man who truly makes her see the light of her not so holy ways!!! I’m a sucker for fanatical religious movies (like Elmer Gantry) AND a sucker for Babs Stanwyck, so when the two come together – BOOM!!!!!!!!!! This is not to be missed!!!
saw it as a double feature with another 1931 Capra flick – Platinum Blonde – which didn’t quite have the same fervor, but was entertaining nonetheless. It was about rascally writer Robert Williams, who slings mud in the newspaper about a prestigious family, and then ends up falling for the family’s title-hair-colored gal Jean Harlow. But what of Williams’ girl Friday Loretta Young, waiting patiently in the background???? Can’t imagine where this one goes, eh??
Sad fact – this was Robert Williams’ FIRST and LAST lead role. He died of peritonitis three days after the film’s premiere. Truly sad, cause he certainly had IT. Like a funnier Sean Penn 🙁
