President receives first Buddy Poppy – Washington, DC, April 6, 1937
Today was happy one for little four-year-old Ruth Joyce Bradish as she pinned the first Buddy Poppy of 1937 on President Roosevelt at the White House. The sale of buddy poppies is conducted annually during the week of memorial day by the veterans of foreign wars for the purpose of raising relief work funds. Little Ruth is the daughter of a deceased ex-serviceman and was brought to Washington for the presentation from the VFW home for widows and orphans of ex-servicemen, Eaton Rapids, Michigan
