Doctor Margaret Wragg Sloss (1901-1979) was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and moved to Ames with her family. Thomas Sloss was the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for the Iowa State University campus, and their home later became known as Sloss House (the current location of the Women’s Center) Her nickname, ‘Toot’ originated in childhood and stuck with her. In 1923, she became the first female staff member at the ISU Veterinary College. She completed her Master’s in 1932, and was the first woman to graduate from the Veterinary Medicine Program in 1938.
