Film Forum’s 66 film – month long salute to ‘Hollywood’s Naughtiest, Bawdiest Year’ – 1933!!! CONCLUDES…
Day 28 goes out with a triple bang – Female + I Cover The Waterfront + The Sin of Nora Moran
Oh Ruth Chatterton!!! We’ve only seen you in two movies, Frisco Jenny, and now Michael Curtiz’ Female, and yet we’re already ready to proclaim you as one of our favorite early talkie actresses ever!!! It’s true!! In Female, Ruth is large and in charge, of an automobile company! If only she could find a CEO of her heart!!! After seeing endless of her male employees after hours, for some fringe and frisky benefits, and nothing to show for it, things finally start to warm up for her when George Brent (her real life hubby from 1932-1934) reports to the office. Ferdinand Gottschalk co-stars as Ruth’s guardian angel / right hand man
journalist Ben Lyon covers the waterfront in James Cruze‘s I Cover the Waterfront, where he tries to crack open a story about a human trafficking sea captain, Ernest Torrance, while trying to make a land-lover out of the captain’s daughter, Claudette Colbert. The movie is completely forgettable, but looking at Claudette’s unbelievable eyes and apple cheeks for 75 minutes is better than not doing it
Phil Goldstone‘s The Sin of Nora Moran isn’t as salacious as its title or poster would suggest (that poster IS INCREDIBLE!!), but its story has plenty twists and turns to keep you worried about Nora (Zita Johann), her lover (Paul Cavanagh), and his brother in-law (Alan Dinehart)’s plights of fancy
